Most clients have little to no experience with family law and it is not unusual for a client to have inappropriate or unrealistic expectations. The initial meeting is your opportunity to explain the realistic range of probable outcomes, on both an interim and final basis and educate your potential client on the rule of law. It is easier to adjust improper expectations at the beginning of representation than it is to do so after those improper expectations have cemented in the client’s mind across the passage of time. Now is not the time to give your clients false and unrealistic expectations.
