Family Violence cases can be more time consuming and emotionally taxing than the average criminal case. A charge of Assault Family Violence carries with it many unique psychological, ethical and legal dynamics which may include researching not only the Penal Code, but the Code of Criminal Procedure, Family Code and Rules of Professional Conduct. These types of cases can intertwine all of these areas of law. Mr. Bassett discusses recent developments in strangulation cases and continuous family violence cases. This topic will also present a discussion of Collateral Consequences or “I Had No Idea That Would Happen,” over the hot topics of protective orders, firearm possession, custody of children, deportation and alimony/maintenance in divorce. The presentation also includes evidentiary issues, with current legislative updates, as well as practice tips and ethical dilemmas.
